Nonverbal communication

I notice myself sometimes avoiding eye contact with people when communicating with them this is something that I need to work on and improve. My posture tends to be more open and relaxed often using hand gestures while telling a story helps me illustrate key points and assist listeners to follow my narrative flow. Reading chapter 4 I can point out room to improve my nonverbal communication like maintaining eye contact and mirroring others posture for better rapport. With this information I learned to scan my own body language for mixed messages to avoid confusion or miscommunication.

Functions of language and how language can be fun, expressive, symbolic, and meaningful

Reflecting and looking back on Chapter 3 I realized how language is much more than just words. We use language like a system of symbols helping us make sense of the world and how we connect with others. Language carries meaning giving us the tools to express ourselves through thoughts, emotions, and needs. Even just the way we chose to speak formally, casually, poetic, or bluntly can say a lot about who you are and how you relate to the world itself. This understanding made me really appreciate language more than just a functionality it can be fun and playful we are able to express this with jokes, puns, and rhymes.
